Hamburgers cooked the same way since day one, with grilled onions on a steamed bun. Two little diners in downtown Kansas City, both in the Crossroads.

In 1937 Claude Sparks opened a little white diner at 2442½ Broadway in Kansas City and began selling hamburgers for 5 cents each. At the end of his first day he had made $21.
Town Topic still sells hamburgers by the bagful, and still cooks them the same way, with grilled onions and a steamed bun. The full breakfast line is the same as it has always been, cooked fresh to order. The downtown diners haven't changed a whole lot since the early days.
Take your place at the counter. Have an old-fashioned hamburger and a hand-dipped malt, a bowl of homemade chili, a fresh breakfast, a piece of pie and coffee, or an ice-cold Coca-Cola, all made right in front of you. Plenty of the regulars have been coming for years, and they have great stories about this city. Just ask them.
“A Kansas City classic. An original greasy spoon.”
